Gillette, Millington & Central Schools

 

 

Gillette School

All classes will run from 3:30-4:30

Students will remain with the attendant until class begins

The attendant will dismiss students from the front main entrance of the school

Please do not enter the building before dismissal

Tuesday (8 weeks:  3/7, 3/14, 3/21, 3/28, 4/11, 4/18, 4/25, 5/2, Make up 5/9):

Chess: Premier Chess is excited to partner with Long Hill Force to offer a chess class for all students. We will teach rules, discuss strategy, and learn about tactical themes that can get students ready to compete in tournaments. Instructor to be provided by Premier Chess.  $195 for 8 classes.  Max 25 students.

 

Puppet Party: We love puppets!  We love to make them, and we love to talk to them and have them talk back!  And if you are good at crafts, you can make your very own puppet each week and create unique characters for them.  Learn how to make all kids of puppets from little finger puppet people to big cute animal hand puppets.  At the end of the semester, you will even get to use your favorite puppet creations in a live puppet show that you put on for your parents!  Best of all, you get to take home your creations so that you have a cast of characters who can star in puppet shows that you create on your own! Its Puppetry!  Create It!  Perform it!  Keep it! Instructor to be provided by Hobby Quest$200 for 8 classes.  Max 18 students.

 

Shockingly Sticky Science: What makes your hair stand up? Is it a magnet or magic? And just what are carbs, anyway? Kids explore a variety of introductory topics about the wonders of both the life and physical sciences. Instructor to be provided by Mad Science.  $200 for 8 classes.  Max 20 students.

 

Stars on Stage:  In Stars on Stage, students will spend 8 one-hour classes learning theatre fundamentals like stage directions, projection and diction, and character building through games, exercises, and rehearsals. Taking creative risks, developing the imagination, and a nonjudgmental environment will be emphasized in order to make all students feel welcome. A casual audition process and rehearsals will culminate in a short performance of the pre-chosen play, "Aristocats" on the day of the final class. Instructor to be provided by Wharton Institute of Performing Arts.  $190 for 8 classes.   Max 14 students.

 

Wednesdays (8 weeks: 3/8, 3/15, 3/22, 3/29, 4/12, 4/19, 4/26, 5/3, Make up 5/10):

 

Abrakadoodle Mini Doodlers- Cute & Cuddly: In this 6-week Cute and Cuddly art program, we’ll be using classic characters from beloved children’s books as our inspiration. We’ll look at Mouse Paint, Paddington, and Gossie and Gertie for some of our cute and cuddly subjects, as well as characters from Karen Katz and Eric Carle. Instructor to be provided by Abrakadoodle.  $140 for 6 classes.  Max 12 students

 

Magic Masters:  Abracadabra! You will be transformed when you learn to perform all new tricks this semester. Learn how to transform one object into another, and make objects disappear!  You will experience amazing fun when you learn the secrets of our jaw-dropping illusions. Once you’ve transformed into a Magical Master, you’ll get to share your new skills with friends and family in a real magic show at your school…and keep all the tricks!  It’s Magical! Learn it! Perform it! Keep it!

PE Games & Activities with Mr. Manto:  This class will be held at Gillette in the Gym. This is a great opportunity for kids to move, have fun, and socialize with their peers. Mr. Manto will have the students playing PE class favorites as well as introduce some new games and activities.  Instructor: Josh Manto.  $90 for 6 classes.  Max 18 students.

Mondays (6 weeks: 3/6, 3/13, 3/20, 3/27, 4/10, 4/17, Make up 4/24):

 

Arts & Crafts (2nd Grade ONLY): Get creative in Arts and Crafts! In this class, you will create meaningful projects that you can keep forever. We will use wood, paint, markers, stencils, etc. We will create picture frames, personalized signs... no two projects alike!  THIS CLASS IS OPEN TO 2ND GRADE ONLY. Instructors: Dana Cursi & Marissa Tavaglione.  $140 for 6 classes.  Max 30 students.

 

Volleyball (4th & 5th Grade ONLY):  The goal of the FORCE volleyball program is to help children develop movement skills and volleyball specific skills in order to move and play with the basic passing and playing fundamentals of the game. The kids will participate in volleyball specific games and drills as well as become part of team building and leadership exercises!  THIS CLASS IS OPEN TO GRADES 4th & 5th ONLY. Instructor: Megan Knott.   $120 for 6 classes.  Max 25 students.

 

Tuesdays (6 weeks: 3/7, 3/14, 3/21, 3/28, 4/11, 4/18, Make up 4/25):

 

Abrakadoodle Drawsters- Drawing Upon Imagination: In this 6-week Drawing Upon Imagination program, children learn skills that will last them a lifetime and help their imaginations take flight. Using artists such as Picasso, Klimt, and Murakami as inspiration, they learn about contour drawing, patterning, font design, cartooning and other drawing techniques. Each series builds confidence and creativity while exploring fun and interesting artists and artist styles.  Instructor to be provided by Abrakadoodle.  $150 for 6 classes.  Max 12 students.

 

Millington Writer’s Collective: Calling all aspiring writers, poets, journalists, storytellers, & illustrators… Do you love to write? Do you want feedback on your ideas or want to improve your creative writing skills? Then

join The Millington Writers Collective! This is an awesome opportunity to develop your creative writing skills, collaborate with new friends, and publish your work. In this class we will work on improving creativity & imagination through fun writing exercises, collaborate with peers to give feedback, proofread, & edit, compose original writing pieces of your choice, and publish the very first Millington Writers Collective Anthology.  Instructor: Christie Burd.  $130 for 6 classes.  Max 25 students.

 

Tuesdays (8 weeks:  3/7, 3/14, 3/21, 3/28, 4/11, 4/18, 4/25, 5/2, Make up 5/9):

 

Cursive Club (for beginners): This club is for students who have not been exposed to cursive at all or those who possess only a limited knowledge of it. We will practice writing the letters of the alphabet individually. We will begin each class with a gross motor activity to awaken the large muscle groups. Next, we will move into a visual motor activity to get the eyes and hands working together. Then we will work on fine motor skills, the handwriting portion. We will end each session with self- and/or group assessments.  Instructor: Pam Kmetz.  $130 for 8 classes.  Max 8 students. 

 

Outdoor Adventure:  In this class, students will explore the bountiful garden located at Millington school and the grounds which surround it. They will learn about different types of plants, wild animals and they will plant and harvest crops. Students will also learn about outdoor skills like using maps, compasses, identifying landmarks, and general navigation. Through participating in this class, students will learn the science behind their natural world which will draw them closer to their natural surroundings. They will learn skills that can be used on a daily basis as they learn about conservation, sustainability and proper care of our environment. Instructors:  Shannon Butler & Andrew Nestler.  $120 for 8 classes.  Max 24 students. 

 

Spies Like Us:  Spies like us know how to break codes.  Spies like us know how to pick locks.  Spies like us know how to pass secret messages.  Spies like us know how to pass undetected in a crowd.  Spies like us know a lot of secrets but we are not telling.  Not unless you join our SPY KIDZ class and learn how to be a secret agent.  But be prepared: this class is not for the faint-hearted.  You will have a top-secret mission every week that you have to complete or your cover will be blown!  This Program Guide will self-destruct in 5 seconds.  It's Spy School!  Decipher It!  Defend It!  Disguise it!   Instructor to be provided by Hobby Quest.  $200 for 8 classes.  Max 18 students.

 

 Wednesdays (6 weeks: 3/8, 3/15, 3/22, 3/29, 4/12, 4/19, Make up 4/26):

 

Tennis: Kids are introduced to the fundamentals of tennis through activities designed to build a solid foundation for long term athletic development. Activities are focused on developing the ABCs (agility, balance, and coordination) all while forming skills necessary to serve, rally, and score. Kids will enjoy playing fun games involving the game of tennis while learning skills! Instructor:  Brittany Lee.  $120 for 6 classes.  Max 20 students.

 

 

Wednesday (8 weeks:  3/8, 3/15, 3/22, 3/29, 4/12, 4/19, 4/26, 5/3, Make up 5/10):

Constructing Ozark & VEX Robotics:  Students will spend 8 weeks doing hands on projects in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.  During this eight-week class, students will explore the exciting world of STEM while they construct a vacuum robot named Ozkar. They will learn about robotics, robots, robot sensors, infrared, I/R sensors, and electricity.  In addition, they will learn about suction and how vacuums work.  They will then use the VEX IQ/ GO Robotics System. All Robotics activities are hands-on, engaging, and focus on the engineering design process. Students will have the opportunity to build and design robots. They will be divided into groups by age and experience. Students will review the VEX Robotics components and build various Robots.  Instructor: Monica Burch.  $195 for 8 weeks.  Max 20 students.

 

Photography Studio: The Photography Studio program is the essential afterschool program for young photographers. Our eight sessions will teach students to make great photos with a discerning eye. Students will learn to manipulate camera functions and set up amazing shots. Session highlights include learning to frame shots using objects and the environment, learning to use the “super macro” function to produce highly detailed and peculiar pieces, and creating a self-portrait. The class concludes with a gallery show in which students will display each of their works in print. It’s Photography!  See it! Capture It!  Film It! Show It! You did it! Instructor to be provided by Hobby Quest.  $200 for 8 classes.  Max 18 students.

Board Games (2nd & 3rd Grade Only): Sign up and play the games you know and love! Learn new games and meet new peers! This club will expose children to popular board games.  We will review how to follow rules, take turns, and play fairly. Games will be run as centers, where your child will choose which game station they want to start and rotate through the different games. Every week, look forward to a new board game or card game added to the mix! Tell your friends and sign up for Board Games with Ms. Butler!  THIS CLASS IS OPEN TO 2ND & 3rd GRADE ONLY. Instructor: Shannon Butler.  $110 for 6 classes.   Max 20 students.

 

Floor is Lava: Floor is Lava is a game where players must imagine the floor is molten hot lava. The players must complete the obstacle course with their team to cross to the other side. The Floor is Lava! is a family game that promotes physical activity, an active imagination, and engaging excitement for kids and adults.  This game gets children jumping, leaping, playing, and improving their strength, conditioning, balance, and endurance! It also allows students to work on team building and problem solving. Each week there will be a different obstacle course & game. Instructor: Brittany Lee.  $120 for 6 classes.  Max 30 students.

Slimeology:  Does your child LOVE slime? If so, this is the perfect class for them! Students will make a different type of slime each week using a unique set of ingredients to go with the theme for the week. Children will be able to bring home their slime creations!  Instructor: Dana Cursi. $140 for 6 classes.  Max 20 students.

Ultimate Engineering: Each week students will be given a task to accomplish (egg drops, water rockets, and building bridges are just a few). They will then plan, design and craft their own solutions. Their designs will be put to the test to determine who is the Ultimate Engineer.  Instructors: Andrew Nestler & Emily Taylor.  $120 for 8 weeks.  Max 24 students.

 

Fridays (6 weeks: 3/10, 3/17, 3/24, 3/31, 4/14, 4/21, Make up 4/28):

 

Sports & Fitness:  This class will feature 2 to 3 different activities each week.  Activities will include discussions on nutrition, bones & muscles, Dodge Ball (foam ball), Volleyball (beach ball), Soccer, Basketball, Kick ball & Wacky Kickball, Team Hand Ball, Capture the Flag, and Hyperspace/tag games.  Please note, activities may vary depending on the age of the class.  Instructor: Mike Lisbona.  $100 for 6 classes.  Max 40 students

 

Fridays (8 weeks: 3/10, 3/17, 3/24, 3/31, 4/14, 4/21, 4/28, 5/5, Make up 5/12):

 

Just Breathe:  This is a yoga/mindfulness class which will include breathing exercises, yoga poses, games and guided relaxation. Just Breathe will teach children how to reduce stress in a healthy way, an important life skill that will help them as children and as adults. Students will also benefit from improving their balance, flexibility and body awareness in this class.  This class is for students who have never done yoga before or have a limited knowledge of it. We will be learning different breathing and relaxation techniques and yoga poses.  Students will have to bring their own yoga mat. Instructor: Pam Kmetz.  $120 for 8 classes.  Max 15 students.

 

Central School

Our Foundation

We support academic enrichment in Long Hill Township. Because school budgets are more restrictive than ever, public schools now rely on private funding to support creative and engaging venues to help children learn.  Proceeds we raise  from donations and fundraisers go directly into programs, grants and sponsorships to enhance areas such as the arts, music, technology and more.

Our Education Foundation is a nonprofit dedicated to providing financial resources to maximize student potential in Long Hill School District.  We do this by providing educational programs, sponsoring speakers, holding events,  as well as  funding  innovation and excellence by providing equipment, supplies and grants to our educators.
